The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Wednesday extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 by 15 days to October 15, 2026.
According to a circular issued by the FBR, the deadline has been extended in view of requests received from various trade bodies and tax bar associations.
The extension has been granted under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, the circular said.
The FBR said the extension applies to persons who are required to file their income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 by September 30.
Earlier on 29 September 2026, FBR warned of penalties for filing income tax returns after September 30. ARY News reported, citing Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) sources.
From October 1, the existing “late filer” category will be discontinued, with taxpayers who fail to file their returns within the deadline being classified as non-filers, sources said.
According to FBR sources, late-payment and other penalties applicable to non-filers will be substantially higher. Taxpayers who fail to submit their income tax returns from October 1 onward will face penalties applicable to non-filers rather than those imposed on late filers.
For individuals, the penalty for failing to file a return will increase from Rs1,000 to as much as Rs25,000, sources said.
The penalty for an Association of Persons (AOP) will rise from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000, while companies failing to file their returns will face a penalty of up to Rs100,000 instead of the existing Rs20,000.
FBR sources also said September 30 is the final deadline for the business community to register for sales tax and income tax under the applicable requirements.
