The Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, has accused opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai of obstructing the constitutional process for the appointment of the chief election commissioner and members of the Election Commission.

Speaking to the media, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry alleged that the opposition leader was failing to fulfil his responsibilities.

He said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had contacted Achakzai twice, but that the opposition leader had refused to meet him.

Chaudhry also accused Achakzai of insisting that a meeting be arranged with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.

“No constitutional office can be filled by a convicted person,” Chaudhry said.

The Federal Minister also criticized Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, accusing him of publicly declaring that his government would not cooperate with the federal government.

He warned that the chief minister’s conduct was creating circumstances that could pave the way for the imposition of emergency rule in the province.

Tariq Fazal also cautioned that CM of KP Sohail Afridi would be responsible for the consequences if he did not change his approach.

He claimed that the provincial government had little or no administrative control in 12 districts and said Afridi had been briefed on matters relating to national security.

The federal minister said the provincial government should take its own measures to tackle terrorism.

“The situation is completely the opposite of what it should be: the federal government wants to take action, but the provincial government is refusing to cooperate,” he said.

Chaudhry said the government was taking all possible measures regarding the health of Imran Khan.

He also warned that the federal government would not allow any attempt to march on or attack Islamabad “under any circumstances”.
