Two major launches planned for smart home hub and new Macs

Apple

Apple is reportedly planning two launch events in October. The first could happen as soon as Tuesday, October 13, and may introduce Apple’s smart home hub with a square 7-inch touchscreen. This event might also reveal a new Apple TV 4K, a HomePod mini with Siri AI, and the next-generation iPad mini ($569 on Amazon).

The compact tablet is expected to get an upgrade to the Apple A20 Pro ARM chip and, for the first time, an OLED display instead of an IPS panel. However, leaker yeux1122 says Apple will use a more affordable 60 Hz LTPS OLED panel instead of a modern 120 Hz LTPO OLED panel.

This means animations will not look as smooth, which could make the tablet less attractive to gamers. Otherwise, its fast processor and compact size would make it a great choice for gaming.

The second launch event, likely in the last week of October, is expected to focus on new Macs. The highlight will be the next-generation MacBook Pro, which might be called the MacBook Ultra.

Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman recently said the device is expected to be much lighter. He now adds that the laptop will only be a little thinner.

For reference, the 14-inch MacBook Pro is 15.5 mm thick and weighs 1.6 kg, while the 16-inch version is 16.8 mm thick and weighs 2.15 kg. Besides a new design, the MacBook Pro is mainly expected to get an OLED touchscreen that swaps the notch for a Dynamic Island.

However, the device is expected to use the same Apple M5 Pro and M5 Max chips found in the previous model.
