Stringent security measures in Peshawar as emergency proclaimed in KPK

PESHAWAR: Extraordinary security arrangements taken in Peshawar amid high security alert as the roads leading to Assembly Chowk and the Red Zone have been closed with containers, ARY News reported on Sunday.

Heavy contingents of police have also been deployed at Peshawar’s GT Road, Warsik Road, Kohat Road and Pishta Kharra road.

Moreover, containers have been deployed at the entry road from Swat, while mobile phone and Internet services have been suspended in Swabi.

The long march led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has been staying in Mardan intending to move towards Peshawar instead of Swabi if the emergency proclaimed.

The IG Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in guidelines to district police officers has directed for security measures to tackle any protest.

“The miscreants or anti-state elements could damage the properties, the police should ensure security of state or public properties and police stations,” KP police chief said.

IG has said that the demonstrations or illegal gathering should initially be tackled with dialogue. “In case of the talks failure, the anti-riot squad will act, after which aerial firing and rubber bullets will be used,” he directed.

He also ordered complete video recording and monitoring of protests.

It is to be mentioned here that the PTI in a party meeting last night opposed the governor’s rule and proclamation of emergency in the province.

The PTI’s political and core committees in a statement after a joint session said that the protection of people’s constitutional and democratic rights adding that the party condemns all forms or terrorism. “The PTI is against terrorists and terrorism,” according to the statement.

The session while lauding the opposition of the governor’s rule from the ANP, JUI and Jamaat Islami said that a joint session will be held again in case of an extraordinary constitutional or executive measure.
