KARACHI: Police have detained several workers for questioning in connection with the murder of an elderly couple whose bodies were found inside their house in North Karachi’s Sir Syed area, ARY News reported.
According to police sources, a carpenter, a plumber and a painter were working at the house. The plumber had completed his work, while the carpenter and painter were still working there.
Police have recorded statements of the workers and are questioning them as part of the investigation. Statements of the victims’ close relatives and neighbours have also been recorded, while investigators have obtained CCTV footage from the area.
However, the footage showing people entering and leaving the house is unclear, police said.
A mobile phone recovered from the house has been sent for forensic examination to help investigators gather further evidence. Police are also seeking details from the family members arriving from Canada. The couple’s children are expected to reach Karachi by tomorrow, according to police.
Meanwhile, the post-mortem reports have revealed severe head injuries to both victims. Muhammad Yamin, aged between 65 and 70, and his wife, Nafis Akhtar, aged between 60 and 65, were found dead inside their house, according to the police surgeon.
Both victims had deep and serious injuries to their heads. Investigators suspect they were killed with a heavy, blunt object.
Samples were collected from the bodies during the post-mortem examinations and will undergo chemical analysis to determine whether either victim was given poison or an intoxicating substance before the killings.
Police are continuing their investigation into the double murder, with the statements of the detained workers and forensic findings expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
