The Indiana Fever have been absent from the court for a few weeks now, but the WNBA offseason hasn’t stopped basketball experts and fans from debate about the future of the team’s guard.
After a hard-fought 2026 season in which the Fever fought in many high-stakes playoff games, the Fever haven’t been featured at an important moment and have plenty of fans wondering if the veteran shooter will return to Indiana next year.
Cunningham completed a one-year deal with the Fever last winter and is now an unrestricted free agent candidate heading into the offseason. She has always been an intense player and willing perimeter spacer in addition to being a vocal locker-room presence with stud players such as Caitlin Clark.
Cunningham’s production has gone far beyond what appears in a box score, but following some major franchise front-office upheavals, she has been absent from the Fever’s team events.
While outside noise persisted from an outside world, the media and outside commentary on her place within a thriving culture, Cunningham doubled down to remind everyone of her belief in herself as a person that she brings to a winning situation.
Talking to all critics and media outlets on her podcast, Cunningham reiterated she is impacting the franchise through intangibles, grit and competitive fire.
‘ I’m gon’ always do me, regardless what somebody else says,’ Cunningham said. ‘I know what I come with. It don’t always read on a stat sheet.’
What’s Next for the Veteran Guard?
As league-wide demand for high-end floor-spacing and veteran grit is unprecented, Cunningham’s value on the open market will be extremely high, no matter where the Fever ultimately decide to rank her among the team. It’ll be interesting to see whether Cunningham re-signs to keep the squad intact, or tests free agency in hopes of finding a better fit.
