New Zealand Skilled Migrant Visa: Eligibility, application process

New Zeland Skilled visa

WELLINGTON: New Zealand’s Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa offers skilled foreign professionals an opportunity to obtain residency and build their future in the country, with the option to include eligible family members in their applications.

The visa allows successful applicants to live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely. Applicants can also include their spouse or partner and dependent children aged 24 or younger, provided they meet the relevant requirements.

According to Immigration New Zealand, the visa application fee starts from NZD 6,450, although the actual cost may vary depending on the applicant’s circumstances and country of application.
Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be aged 55 or younger at the time of application and meet the country’s health, character and English-language requirements. They must also have a full-time skilled job or a valid job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer.

The employment must generally involve at least 30 working hours per week and be permanent, fixed-term for at least 12 months, or covered by a contract or consecutive contracts totalling at least six months.

Under the points-based pathway, applicants must obtain six skilled resident points through eligible qualifications, occupational registration or income. Additional points may be claimed through qualifying skilled work experience in New Zealand.

Application process

The process begins with submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) to Immigration New Zealand. There is no fee for submitting an EOI.

Applicants who meet the relevant eligibility requirements may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) by email. They must then submit their complete residence visa application within the specified timeframe.

Required documents generally include a valid passport, photographs, medical certificates, police clearance certificates, evidence of qualifications and employment, and proof of English-language proficiency. Documents not issued in English must be accompanied by acceptable English translations.

Immigration authorities may also request additional documentation or an interview during the assessment process.

Pathway to permanent residency

Successful applicants can live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely under the Resident Visa. After holding the resident visa for two consecutive years, they may apply for a Permanent Resident Visa, subject to meeting the applicable eligibility and commitment-to-New-Zealand requirements.

The scheme provides skilled professionals with an opportunity to pursue long-term employment and residency in New Zealand while potentially bringing eligible family members with them.
