The Kingdom’s commercial agencies recently issued a warning to company owners, in a decisive step to protect the Kingdom’s economy and to tackle commercial crimes, mentioning that the Kingdom’s Ministry of Commerce made a stern warning against the abuse of the bank accounts of the commercial agencies.

The warning confirms that the bank accounts of the enterprise should be limited to legitimate commercial practices only. Entrepreneurs and company directors should monitor all transfers, transactions, and incoming deposits, as they will be subject to legal violations, according to the agency.

As per the official ministry advisory, the corporate accounts are meant for legitimate business activity only. Business owners have been warned in the ministry advisories not to allow third-party operations of their corporate accounts.

Unusual banking activities, as per the ministry advisory, involve – an unusual amount of cash deposits or transfers of funds from unknown sources; domestic or foreign fund flow to people/entities with no formal contractual relationship with the account holder; and payment of bills through proxies.

The ministry also pointed out the dangers of operating several corporate bank accounts without any substantial commercial rationale or operational connection to another account, noting that they are at risk of being exploited for illegal activities.

Business owners are now legally mandated to constantly monitor every agreement, contract and financial transfer connected to their business. To neglect to do so, or to permit the use of their accounts for criminal finance, can lead to a criminal conviction and a significant fine.

This proactive regulatory alert is consistent with the general economic regulatory ecosystem Saudi Arabia is building under Vision 2030 focused on fostering transparency and upholding integrity in commercial activities to guard against financial crime.

Through tightening its regulatory control over business banking channels, the Ministry of Commerce is maintaining an investment environment that is safe, transparent, and reliable for its people, residents, and businesses from around the world.
