Rockstar Games has explained why Jason and Lucia are the main characters in Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). The team realized that having more protagonists would give players less time to connect with each one, potentially weakening the bond between players and the characters.
In an interview with IGN published on August 27, Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, said that the team discussed several possibilities regarding the protagonist roster following GTA 5.
GTA 5 marked a turning point for the series by allowing players to switch among three main characters: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. For the next installment, Rockstar even looked into the idea of having four playable leads.
However, as the character count grew, it became difficult to allocate enough time to each character’s story. “We worried about diluting the amount of player time with each and therefore player connection with those characters,” Nelson explained. Consequently, instead of adding more characters, the studio decided to focus on two individuals in a relationship.
Jason and Lucia’s partnership shapes both the story and how the game plays. Players will be able to switch between the two as they explore Leonida, taking part in activities like pool, mini-golf, or kayaking. Working together on heists or robberies will also strengthen their relationship in the game.
As players spend time with both characters in the open world, their bond gets stronger, and the story feels more personal. Even if players skip the optional activities, the main story still shows Jason and Lucia as a team, so it’s up to each player how much they want to focus on their relationship.
Unlike GTA 5, which wove together the lives of three separate characters, GTA 6 focuses on getting to know Jason and Lucia both as individuals and as partners, putting their relationship at the heart of the experience.
GTA 6 is set to arrive on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
