The government of Pakistan and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have agreed to impose both an emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), according to sources.
The federal government has decided to invoke Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, the sources said.
An emergency would be imposed under Article 232 to address terrorism, external aggression and unrest.
Article 234 would be invoked over alleged failures in running the provincial government in accordance with the Constitution.
Under Article 234, the president would transfer administrative powers to the provincial governor on the recommendation of the federal government, the sources added.
Earlier, while speaking to ARY News program ‘The Reporter’, the governor of KP, Faisal Karim Kundi, said an emergency, governor’s rule, or both measures could be imposed simultaneously.
He said an emergency could be imposed in one area while governor’s rule was introduced in another.
KP Governor said he will send a report on the province’s law and order situation to the prime minister, possibly later tonight.
Faisal Karim Kundi said he would submit the report whenever the president or prime minister requested it.
He said that under the procedure, the prime minister would send a summary to the president after receiving the governor’s report.
Kundi said parliament had 10 days to approve an emergency after it was imposed.
He added that decisions would be taken in line with the federal cabinet’s recommendations.
