Police have arrested a man accused of defrauding Laiba Ijaz, a gold medallist student at the International Islamic University Islamabad, of Rs.9.3 million by promising her a US visa and scholarship, according to reports.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Operations has confirmed the arrest of suspect Noman, who is being questioned by police.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has also registered a case against Noman and his accomplice Fatima Sarwar over the alleged fraud.
According to the first information report (FIR), the two suspects allegedly looted Rs.9.3 million from Laiba Ijaz by promising to secure her a US visa and scholarship.
The FIR states that the suspects used fake scholarship documents and university admission offer letters to deceive the student and her family.
The FIR says that of the total amount, Rs.2.9 million was allegedly transferred through Laiba Ijaz’s bank account, while the remaining sum was paid in cash.
The document further states that Ejaz died by suicide following the alleged financial fraud and psychological distress.
