Headed to the polls for the 2026 U.S. midterms? It pays to know what time the voting locations open and close-ahead of time and as the votes start to come in-to make sure everything goes smoothly and to follow the updates.
The time difference alone complicates things as unlike most nations, the U.S. spans numerous time zones and not only does each state decide how to run its elections down to the local level, but voting hours are far from consistent.
When Do Polling Stations Open?
Nationally, most polling stations open their doors in the wee hours of the morning, usually sometime between 6 and 7 a.m. local time. Opening times, however, can vary significantly across states and even municipalities as follows:
States that opened earliest Vermont, Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia have a 6:00 a.m. ET opening for in-person voting.
Most of the state capitals and battleground states such as Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Illinois open their polling stations no later than 7:00 a.m. local time.
Western Time Zones: The later we are in the day the later we will open. Depending on location, the different states in the Western Time Zones will open later to accommodate the different Sunrise timings, local operational system and the time zones.
The Rollout of Poll Closings on Election Night
In a sharp contrast to other nations’ national elections, the United States doesn’t shut down all polling places at the same time. It is a “rolling” shutdown of polls from east to west for six different time zones until the last polling places close past midnight:
6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. ET: The earliest voting locations in eastern Indiana and Kentucky are the first to close. At 7:00 p.m. ET, a large block of voting locations in Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and the rest of Indiana and Kentucky come to a halt.
7:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. ET: Critical swing states lock down Ohio and West Virginia begin closing at 7:30 p.m. ET, and just ten minutes later at 8 p.m. ET, the remaining votes of a huge clutch of states, starting with Pennsylvania and New Jersey and going down the Central time states of Florida, Michigan and into all of Texas will conclude in-person voting.
9 p.m.-10 p.m. ET: Voting ends in the Mountain and Central time zones as results start rolling in from the key states of Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin and most of Texas.
In a last call on the West Coast that inevitably ends with California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and Alaska where the last polling places in the Aleutian Islands close at 1:00 a.m. ET.
(NOTE: Nearly all state laws provide that any qualified voter who is in line before the polls close must be allowed to vote.)
Essential Tips for Election Day Voters
To ensure no issues arise at the booth, you should double-check your registration and locate your polling place early on through local or state election websites. As the 2026 midterm election cycle wraps up, make sure to have your state-approved photo ID ready and plan out how you’ll get to the polls to get the most out of your vote.
