WNBA finals game 7 makes playoff history with 3.3m viewers

WNBA finals game

The closing game of the 2026 WNBA Finals delivered an average audience of 3.3 million viewers across USA Network, CNBC and Peacock, according to early data from Nielsen and Adobe Analytics.

The exciting conclusion for the Golden State Valkyries to win the Atlanta Dream 68-63 and be crowned WNBA champions for the first time – the most viewed WNBA playoff game ever.

Breaking Multi-Decade Audience Records

That total smashes the previous WNBA playoff record, which was established in 1999 when 3.25 million fans watched Game 3 of the Finals between the New York Liberty and Houston Comets.

Key milestones delivered by Game 7 include:

Postseason Record: The highest-rated playoff game in WNBA history.

Cable & Streaming Peak: The most viewers ever for a WNBA game on cable and streaming.

Deciding game surge: 128% higher than the most-watched game in the 2025 WNBA Finals.

The second-highest attended WNBA game on any platform since Opening Weekend of 1997.

Breakthrough Year for WNBA Media Rights

2026 postseason became the first year the league adopted its expanded best-of-seven format for the WNBA Finals, and a new multi-platform media partnership.

Though games were broadcast on many network and streaming platforms all season long, total fan engagement hit new heights. The complete, seven-game series averaged 1.89 million viewers, surpassing the previous series-record of 1.5 million set during the 2024 Finals.

“Game 7 was a victory lap for us as a WNBA media partner, breaking records in the number of fans watching the league’s game than ever before,” network executives said after initial numbers were published.

Valkyries Complete Championship Run

Up on the court, the biggest game in the broadcast was every bit of it. Golden State ended its great championship journey with a strong second-half performance from Finals MVP Gabby Williams, who scored 30 points and blocked four shots to slow Atlanta’s rally.

For the fifth-straight year, the Finals continue to move the global needle with increased attendance and merchandise sales, and now record TV ratings as well.
