Oman is making a huge leap towards cutting-edge medical infrastructure with the opening of Nucleus Oman, the country’s first-ever facility dedicated solely to producing radiopharmaceuticals for medical diagnosis and care.
The state-of-the-art project, which is driven by a strategic partnership between the Oman Investment Authority (OIA), Oryx Isotopes Company of Saudi Arabia, and other ministries, aims to eliminate dependency on imports.
Since radiopharmaceuticals are radioactive and face time constraints, local medical professionals have made the development of an in-house manufacturing solution a top priority.
The advanced manufacturing complex will enable hospitals nationwide to access new, consistent diagnostic and therapeutic radio pharmaceuticals – essential for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases.
In addition to processing, the factory will house units for specialized targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy, laboratories for research and development, and a Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory to standardize instruments for measuring ionizing radiation according to international standards.
The initiative has been celebrated as an achievement for public-private sector cooperation and economic diversification by several high-ranking officials from across the government including OIA President Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi who said the project heralds the foundation for sector specific industrialization, technology transfer and workforce training.
Minister of Finance Sultan bin Salim al Habsi and Minister of Health Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al Sabti highlighted how the project will strengthen the public sector by making spending more efficient, improving healthcare services, and delivering more specialized patient care.
With its strong regional export capacity and advanced logistics network, Nucleus Oman is expected to emerge as a leading medical and technological hub in the region.
