Sony PS6 and Xbox Project Helix specs rumored ahead of launch next year

Rumors about Sony and Microsoft’s next consoles have been around for some time. Two leakers have regularly shared details about possible specs, release dates, and other features.

Recently, one leaker named Kepler_L2 revealed the compute power for both consoles and shared what stage of development they are in.

On the NeoGAF forum, Kepler_L2 replied to a comment with performance numbers for the PS6 and Project Helix. According to him, the PS6 will have 40 TFLOPS (tera floating-point operations per second), while Helix will have 56 TFLOPS.

These numbers show the raw compute power of the APUs inside each console. Project Helix is expected to use the Magnus APU, and the PS6 will use the Orion APU. Both chips are made by AMD.

Although these numbers give a good idea of raw power, actual gaming performance depends on many other things. Xbox is aiming for a hybrid PC and console setup with Project Helix, but Sony is not taking the same approach with the PS6.

Kepler_L2 also shared where these chips are in development. Both have reportedly passed the ‘tape-out’ stage, meaning their design and layout are finished and have been sent to the manufacturer.

This suggests both consoles could launch next year, with November as the most likely reveal month. That timing would also mark the end of the usual seven-year cycle for current consoles.
