KARACHI: Chairman People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto will inaugurate Karachi’s TP-1 sewerage treatment plant of the Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan today, marking a step towards improving wastewater management and supplying treated water for industrial use.
TP-1 sewage treatment plant in Gutter Bagheecha, Haroon Abad, spreads over around 180 acres of land.
The plant would initially treat 35 million gallons of wastewater per day (MGD), with addition of 65 MGD, its sewerage treatment capability will reach to overall 100 million gallons per day (MGD).
The treatment facility would enable the city to supply treated wastewater to industrial users, helping reduce reliance on freshwater resources while promoting the sustainable management and reuse of water.
The city authorities have a long-term target of bringing maximum sewerage under the treatment system.
Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has said that the basic objective is to prevent disposal of untreated sewerage into the sea.
He said currently 28-million-gallon sewerage water is being treated daily. “The recycling of sewerage water and its use in industries will bring pressure on the city’s freshwater resources,” mayor further said.
He described the project as an important milestone in Karachi’s efforts to modernize its urban infrastructure and improve environmental management through advanced wastewater treatment.
