With just over two weeks left before the iPhone Duo launches, Apple has started accepting apps designed for its foldable iPhone. In a message to developers, Apple announced that they can now submit optimized apps and games through App Store Connect.
The iPhone Duo will be available on October 23 in the US, starting at $1,999. Preorders begin October 12.
In most cases, developers just need to recompile their apps. Rebuilding an app with Xcode 27.1 adds support for the iPhone Duo. Xcode’s Device Hub lets developers see how their app works in different positions and orientations, which is important for a foldable phone that will be opened, closed, and rotated often.
Current apps will work on the iPhone Duo even without updates, but they won’t use the whole screen. According to MacRumors, only apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later will fill the inner display. Other apps will show black borders, which stands out on a device known for its large folding screen.
To push developers to update their apps, Apple has set a deadline. Starting in April 2027, all new apps and games must include screenshots for the iPhone Duo. Apple has already changed its screenshot and app preview rules, and a new preview tool in App Store Connect lets developers see how their app’s page will look on the Duo.
Apple is also holding workshops worldwide to help developers get their apps ready for the new format.
The screenshot rule is a strong signal. It doesn’t force developers to update their apps, but it shows that Apple plans to treat the Duo as its own device category in the App Store, not just a niche product.
For buyers, this means not every app will use the full display when the Duo launches on October 23. Developers must update their apps, but Apple has now given them the tools to get started.
