Association holds principal, regulatory authority responsible

Peshawar School Tragedy

PESHAWAR: Private School Association leader Inamullah Khan has held the school principal and the Private Schools Regulatory Authority responsible for the collapse of a school building in Peshawar, ARY News reported.

Speaking to the media at the site, Inamullah Khan said the affected school was registered with the association, but its role was limited to granting membership. He said the responsibility for monitoring schools and maintaining checks and balances rested with the Private Schools Regulatory Authority.

He said the association was unaware that the school building was in a dilapidated condition. According to Inamullah Khan, the school principal and the regulatory authority were responsible for the incident because the authority had failed to inspect the building.

The association leader also revealed that permission to construct a three-storey school building was not allowed in the area where the school was located.

The school roof collapse in Peshawar has claimed 35 lives, while dozens of injured people remain under treatment at hospitals. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Earlier, Managing Director of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Private Schools Regulatory Authority (KP-PSRA) Javed Iqbal revealed that the private school whose roof collapsed in Dir Colony was registered in March 2026

Speaking about the ongoing investigation, Iqbal said officials had learned that technical personnel were not present during the school’s inspection.

He stressed that the presence of technical officials during inspection visits was essential, explaining that authorities assessed the number of classrooms, the building’s foundations and its overall structural condition.

Iqbal said that when a school was registered, its classrooms and other relevant facilities were examined, while construction experts were expected to inspect the building and submit a report.

He added that the authority did not have the power to shut down an unregistered school under the applicable arrangements.
