AL DUQM: Oman’s renewable energy ambitions are gaining further momentum with two wind power projects in Duqm advancing to the construction-ready stage, marking another step in the country’s efforts to expand clean electricity generation and strengthen local energy capabilities.
The Duqm North and Duqm South Wind Project, being developed within the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), will comprise six wind turbines with a combined capacity of 58 megawatts. Once operational, the projects are expected to generate about 190 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually.
The initiative is being spearheaded by Naqaa Sustainable Energy, a subsidiary of O-Green, as part of the broader Duqm City Renewable Energy programme.
The latest milestone follows the completion of electrical engineering and design work by Design Group Engineering Consultants (DGEC), which has supported the projects from the initial engineering phase through regulatory approvals, permitting and grid-connection arrangements.
According to DGEC, both developments have now moved beyond the conceptual and approval stages and are fully tendered and ready for construction.
Duqm North will feature a single 9.6 MW turbine. Its electrical system includes a 33 kV connection extending roughly 2.5 kilometres to the grid, together with underground cables, protection systems, SCADA infrastructure and temporary power facilities required during construction.
The larger Duqm South project will comprise five turbines with a total capacity of 48 MW. Its infrastructure will include 33 kV inter-array cables, medium-voltage switchgear, transformers and a 132 kV switchgear bay. A nine-kilometre overhead transmission line will connect the project to the grid, while additional works will be carried out at the receiving substation.
The developments are also closely linked to Oman’s emerging domestic wind-energy manufacturing sector. The projects are expected to use turbines produced locally by Mawarid Turbine, a new manufacturing venture being established in Duqm with backing from O-Green.
The facility is expected to manufacture multi-megawatt wind turbines using technology licensed from Shanghai Electric Group, creating a stronger connection between renewable power generation and local industrial development.
The Duqm projects form part of a wider wind-energy expansion planned by Naqaa and OQ Alternative Energy, the clean-energy investment arm of OQ Group. In July, the two partners announced agreements covering wind projects in Al Duqm, Mahout and Sadah with a combined potential capacity of up to 1,100 MW.
