ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: Public and private educational institutions in Rawalpindi were closed on Tuesday as torrential rains inundated low-lying areas of the twin cities, triggered urban flooding and raised concerns over a possible rise in Nullah Lai’s water level.
The district administration announced the closure of educational institutions as a precautionary measure following heavy rainfall across Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Several low-lying areas of Islamabad were inundated, while rainwater accumulated on major roads, including Rawal Road, Airport Road and Islamabad Expressway, causing difficulties for commuters.
Authorities issued a high alert as water levels in Rawal and Khanpur dams continued to rise. Sirens were sounded in areas surrounding Nullah Lai to warn residents about the increasing water flow and the possibility of further escalation.
According to the Managing Director of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), the water level in Nullah Lai reached 27 feet at Kattarian and 21 feet at Gawalmandi. Residents of surrounding areas were alerted as authorities anticipated a further rise in the water level.

Rawalpindi recorded particularly heavy rainfall, with Shamsabad receiving 195 millimetres, the highest recorded amount. New Kattarian received 180mm, Golra 157mm, while the Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded 146mm.
Several neighbourhoods were affected by overflowing drainage channels. Nullahs in Safdarabad and Hazara Colony overflowed, sending water into streets and residential areas, while Nadeem Colony, Javed Colony and Arya Mohalla were also inundated.
