Foreign veterinary experts to arrive in Karachi for Madhubala’s treatment

KARACHI: A team of foreign veterinary experts is arriving in Karachi to examine and treat African elephant Madhubala, whose health has deteriorated at Safari Park, according to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

A six-member team of Sri Lankan veterinary experts will conduct a detailed examination of Madhubala on Friday. The team will assess her condition and recommend further treatment and medication.

Madhubala, who has been undergoing prolonged treatment for tuberculosis, is suffering from worsening health problems. Safari Park officials said an infection in her feet has also made it difficult for her to walk.

Last month, Madhubala suddenly collapsed inside her enclosure, prompting authorities to seek assistance from foreign veterinary specialists.

A KMC spokesperson said Madhubala suffered from acute weakness and low immunity following prolonged treatment for tuberculosis, which contributed to her sudden fall.

She is currently being given antibiotics as a precautionary measure on the advice of a senior local veterinarian. KMC spokesperson Daniyal Alishan Siyal said that her medical reports had been shared with Sri Lankan wildlife health specialist Dr Buddhika for assessment.

Safari Park officials said every possible measure would be taken to improve Madhubala’s condition.

Ailing elephant ‘Noor Jehan’ breathes her last at Karachi Zoo

Madhubala’s companion, Noor Jehan, died in 2023 after suffering a serious health crisis at Karachi Zoo. The 17-year-old African elephant had undergone emergency treatment for a tumour but collapsed days later and remained critically ill.

Noor Jehan was treated under the supervision of international experts, including a Four Paws team that visited her during her illness.

According to an autopsy report released by the KMC, Noor Jehan died from a severe blood parasitic infection and internal trauma, with the report also pointing to inadequate medical care.
