Pakistan Railways targets 14 freight trains by January 2027

Freight trains

Pakistan Railways plans to increase the number of operational freight trains to 14 by January 2027 in an effort to meet growing demand from the business community and boost revenue.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi at the Railways Headquarters.

Officials also approved the establishment of a dry port in Khanewal to strengthen freight operations and generate additional income.

The initiatives are part of the department’s efforts to improve its financial position and expand rail-based cargo transportation.

The government plans to seek an investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) into the role of train examiners in accidents caused by mechanical faults, officials said.

Pakistan Railways will also install five additional weighbridges across the country by 31 December to prevent overloading of trains.

The minister directed officials to hold operational meetings at the divisional level rather than at the railway headquarters, saying the move would help improve efficiency and performance.

Other decisions included phasing out DVM and DVS coaches and operating sleeper factories in two shifts to increase production.

The measures are aimed at improving railway operations, strengthening freight services, enhancing safety standards and increasing revenue through better infrastructure and management.
