Authorities have stepped up measures to prevent a planned long march by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), with raids on the homes of party workers and arrests reported in Jhelum.
The administration in Jhelum has completed preparations to close three bridges in the city in an effort to restrict movement during the protest.
On the other hand, officials have also continued raids on the homes of PTI supporters.
The report says about 80 workers have been arrested, while 60 have been detained in the district jail under the Maintenance of Public Order (3-MPO) law.
Large numbers of containers have been placed on Jhelum’s Naya Pul bridge. Bags filled with soil are also reportedly being brought to the site to put in the containers for making it heavier.
Workers responsible for the containers said that they had been halted at the location for several days. They said they were concerned that goods worth millions of rupees could be damaged, and they also complained of difficulties with accommodation and food.
Meanwhile, a PTI leadership meeting has reportedly discussed postponing the long march, with a majority of participants said to have supported the proposal.
