KARACHI: A decision has been taken to exhume the grave of medical student Syed Sultan Zafar nearly one year after his death to determine whether he died in an accident or was killed, ARY News reported.
According to police officials, Sultan Zafar was injured in an alleged accident near Do Darya on July 23 last year. He died after falling from the trunk of a moving car while travelling with his friends.
Sultan Zafar remained under treatment at a hospital for several days before he died on July 30, 2025. His family has claimed that he was killed and demanded a transparent investigation into the incident.
The FIR states that Sultan Zafar’s friends told police that he was sitting on the trunk of a moving car along with another friend. The car was travelling at a speed of around 20 kilometers per hour when Sultan suddenly fell from the trunk and suffered a head injury.
The investigating police officer said Sultan Zafar’s grave was previously scheduled to be exhumed on September 30, but the process could not take place. He was buried at Shah Latif Khoi Goth.
Police officials said a seven-member medical board has been constituted for the exhumation under the supervision of Professor of Radiology Dr Saba Sohail. The board includes a neurosurgeon, forensic medicine specialists and medico-legal officers.
Syed Sultan Zafar, the maternal grandson of renowned doctors Professor Syed Tipu Sultan and Professor Dr Sher Shah Syed, died in Karachi in a traffic accident in July 2025.
Following his death, his mother Dr Mehr Afroze donated his organs, including his kidneys.
