Northern lights seen across UK after strong solar activity

Rare geomagnetic activity forced the aurora borealis far south of its typical Arctic boundaries, illuminating skies throughout the United Kingdom with a stunning display of the northern lights.

Bright bands of pink, purple, and green lighting up the night were photographed by stargazers from the Scottish Highlands to southern English counties like Devon, Hampshire, and Kent.

A higher level of solar activity as the sun gets closer to the peak phases of its regular eleven-year cycle is what caused the celestial show, the Met Office said.

Different wavelengths of energy were released as energetic charged particles from the Sun impacted with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Nitrogen created eye-catching purple and blue drapes across the horizon, while oxygen interactions produced vivid green hues.

The strong solar storm produced ideal viewing conditions nationwide, according to space weather analysts, and thousands of amateur photographers and astronomers shared long-exposure photos online.

Even though the peak intensity happened over the weekend, UK meteorological officials have warned that until air conditions stabilize later in the week, observers may be able to catch another glimpse of the phenomenon under clear skies due to residual geomagnetic enhancements.
