Take-Two Interactive held its annual shareholder meeting on September 17. The company didn’t share any big news, but it did say GTA 6 Online will arrive well after the main game’s release. For now, the publisher is focusing on the single-player campaign instead of multiplayer.
According to a post by nicoreese on the ResetEra forums, Take-Two shared this statement:
“GTA 6 is a single-player title and is due to release this November. We will continue to support GTA Online after GTA VI release and beyond.”
This update likely isn’t a surprise to fans who follow Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier. On an August 7 podcast, he said not to expect a multiplayer reveal “anytime soon.” For now, Rockstar’s marketing will focus on players exploring Leonida with Jason, Lucia, and other characters.
Some fans who pre-ordered the game were hoping for a co-op mode with the main characters when GTA 6 launches. However, GTA Online is still very popular, so Rockstar may not feel the need to hurry its replacement. In the quarter ending June 30, Take-Two said spending went up 3% from last year, thanks to microtransactions.
No one knows exactly when the online mode will launch, but Paul Tassi from Forbes shared his thoughts. He thinks it could be another year or two before it arrives. He also believes the publisher and studio will wait until GTA Online becomes less popular before making the switch. Until then, they’ll rely on strong sales from the new game.
Even though the online mode isn’t coming soon, leaks have revealed some possible multiplayer features. During a legal dispute with former Rockstar employees, a private chat mentioned a 32-player format. This is similar to the current GTA Online, which allows up to 30 players at once.
These messages show that work on GTA 6 Online has already started. However, to prevent another delay, the team may now be focusing only on the single-player part.
