NCCIA exposes gang involved in online taxi fraud targeting drivers

Online taxi fraud

ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has exposed a group allegedly involved in an online taxi fraud targeting drivers through fake SIM cards, WhatsApp and online accounts, ARY News reported.

According to an NCCIA spokesperson, the suspects posed as government officials and booked rides in areas near the Red Zone in Rawalpindi to target drivers.

The suspects allegedly used hospital bills and medical emergencies as excuses to convince drivers to transfer money to them.

After receiving payments online, the suspects cancelled the rides and cut off all contact with the drivers, the spokesperson said.

A case has been registered against the suspects, while further investigation is underway, the NCCIA spokesperson added.

Earlier, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in Lahore arrested the alleged mastermind of an international online fraud scheme worth Rs.35 billion.

Investigators allege that a website set up to sell counterfeit US postage stamps was used to sell more than five million fake stamps.

Authorities said they conducted raids at 35 locations across Punjab, Islamabad, and Sindh as part of the operation to arrest the suspect.

The NCCIA said the crackdown was being carried out under the zero-tolerance policy of its Director General, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, targeting international cyber fraud and activities that could damage Pakistan’s reputation.
