Former Pakistan legend Mohammad Yousuf has told Babar Azam to take a break from domestic red-ball cricket and get himself some expert coaching in England or Australia to overcome his many technical glitches.
Babar Azam’s technical glitches and his long run of poor form came under the spotlight following an underwhelming performance in the recently concluded home ODI tri-series involving England and Sri Lanka. In five matches, he scored only 118 runs at an average of 23.60.
On the social media X, Yousuf said he felt terrible for the 32-year-old, saying trying to overcome the slump in the next domestic series – the Quaid-e-Azam trophy – would only add to the batter’s woes and career setbacks.
“Instead of suffering mental fatigue in local matches, I would recommend the PCB to send Babar to a renowned overseas academy. If Babar is also working with top-notch technical coaches abroad, in tough conditions such as Australia or England, he would be able to rectify his game in a workshop,” said Yousuf.
Yousuf insisted that Babar is yet the best batsman for Pakistan and still has that high-class natural talent to take on the international bowling line-ups.
Nevertheless, he said, it needs focused high-performance coaching and targeted technical change interventions to make him find his scoring boots again.
“I had told people the same thing about him a few years back when he was struggling and I am again telling you to forget about the matches, and let him be with the technical guys so that he can again hit that vintage world-class form quickly.”
I don’t think #BabarAzam should be playing first class cricket until he fixes his technical issues through specialized coaching. Struggling in domestic cricket could further harm his confidence and career. Send him to an academy in #England or #Australia. He is still Pakistan’s top player, and with the right guidance and a little effort, he can return to his best. I said this four years ago, and nobody listened. Please listen now 🙏
